Security will only apply if you need to have
sensitive information sent over the Internet.
This, from the most obvious, will include order forms containing
credit card details, usually used in conjunction with online order forms and e-commerce
applications.
Although, as with some websites, customers are
asked to submit very personal information and this also may need to be kept secure.
The first thing you will need to decide is
"Will my site need security". If so, the following will explain
(in general
terms) the process of sending secure information over the Internet.
A visitor will enter you site, the first few pages
will usually be unsecured as no sensitive information is entered, sent or viewed.
If a purchase is required and sensitive
information needs to be submitted, the visitor will be told that they will be entering a
secure site. Whilst in this secure area all data entered will not be seen by anyone else.
Note: When you are viewing pages on a secure server, the
browsers will display either a Key or a Padlock symbol. This indicates that the area is
secure. Clicking on these symbols will display the security information.
